Four divisions of the CIF-Southern Section find Catholic school teams near the top of their weekly rankings issued Sept. 22. With league play fast approaching (and underway in some cases), a few teams stand out in the archdiocese.

—Flintridge Sacred Heart (6-3, No. 3 in Division 1AA) had a tough schedule to start off the season, opening against defending CIF-SS Division 1A champion La Salle, in a rematch of last year’s CIF-SS semifinal matchup. The Tologs swept the Lancers, 3-0, then won their next five matches, only dropping two sets in that streak.

Entering last weekend’s Durango Fall Classic tournament in Las Vegas undefeated, FSHA won their first three matches, including a win over Lakewood, then top-ranked in Division 1AA (now No. 4). Despite dropping their next three games to very talented teams, the Tologs remain the team to beat.

—Mayfield (6-2, No. 3 in Division 2AA) beat a tough Westridge squad on Sept. 12, and have lost only to powerhouses Lakewood and La Ca√±ada (No. 2 in Division 2AA). The Cubs are 3-0 in Prep League play, downing Flintridge Prep, Westridge and Rio Hondo Prep.

They have four more league games before traveling to Phoenix for the Nike Tournament of Champions, then return to league action. Mayfield has a solid shot at the Division 2AA championship, after finishing as runner-up in 2013.
