Two student teams from the Marine Science Academy at St. Anthony High School in Long Beach recently secured top 10 finalist spots in the San Francisco International Ocean Film Festival’s 4th Annual Student Film Competition.
The two teams, which consist of 10 seniors each, will be traveling to San Francisco to view the screenings of their films on March 1, the third day of the four-day festival, during the Student Film Program. The first film — titled “Parker’s Sea Turtle Adventure” — is about a young boy who learns about small changes he can make to help protect sea turtles, and the second film — “Making a Killing” — demonstrates that a practice called “finning” is fatal for sharks.
“We are so excited for the opportunity to go to San Francisco and are thrilled that both of our films are top ten finalists,” said Andrea Carothers, the program director for St. Anthony’s Marine Science Academy.
The annual student film contest invites middle school and high school students from around the world to create short films that express what inspires them about our global oceans, and that raise awareness about issues pertaining to them. This year other student finalists come from schools in Michigan, Texas and Turkey.
According to a representative of the San Francisco International Ocean Film Festival, the screening committee recognizes each film finalist “as an exceptional creative achievement from among the many great films received.”
