A group of eight students from Junípero Serra High School in Gardena participated in the National High School Model United Nations Conference held this spring in New York, where the small delegation represented the nation of Papua New Guinea.

The student participants — which included Tommy Bothwell, Freddy Soltero, Justin Nkemere, Grant Crudupt, Jorrod Cook, Justin Shepherd, J’son Jones and Anthony Licea — received high praises from the chair people in their committees. The team’s areas of strength included displaying excellent use of team work, being highly involved in debate and controlling the flow of conversations in the room, which ultimately led to creating solutions and resolution writing.

“This was an invaluable experience for the students who attended, and not only that, but, since there were over 3,800 kids in total attendance, Serra can now say that its [model] UN program competed at the largest conference ever held,” said Brendan Reynolds, coach of the model UN team. “This is a great step for our program, and I am confident that we will only get bigger and stronger from here.”
