The Social Justice Committee of the San Pedro Region is coordinating two free workshops that could help some individuals reclassify select felonies to misdemeanors. The workshops are the result of California’s Proposition 47, which was passed in Nov. 2014. The new regulations changed certain low-level crimes from potential felonies to misdemeanors.
The committee began the workshops at the request of Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Solis as part of the Year of Mercy.
The Prop 47 Reclassification Clinics may be able to assist those charged with qualifying felonies, which include simple drug possession, shoplifting, petty theft and receiving stolen goods and property valued under $950. In addition, those accused of forgery or insufficient funds of under $950 may also qualify.
The first clinic will take place Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to noon at St. Lucy’s Church, located at 2301 Santa Fe Avenue in Long Beach; and the second clinic will be held March 12 from 10 a.m. to noon at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church (St. Raphael Room), 525 Opp Street in Wilmington.
Those seeking reclassification are asked to bring a copy of their criminal record (docket or rap sheet). Those who need to obtain their records may visit any criminal court in the county where the conviction was served. The clerk’s office is able to provide a complete printout of a person’s criminal docket. (This service is free in Long Beach.)
Those persons seeking reclassification may also visit any local Live Scan office to obtain their rap sheet for $35 to $60, with a wait time of two to four weeks.
