The Tidings received six awards at the Catholic Media Convention held June 20-22 in Indianapolis, and the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Directory (published by The Tidings) received a first place award from the Catholic Press Association. The 2012 CPA honors for newspapers included a first place, three seconds and an honorable mention for The Tidings. The eligible period for entry was Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2011. The awards were:—Best Multiple Picture Package Originating with the Newspaper (News): First place for “Go forth with confidence…” (issue of March 4, 2011), with photos by Victor Aleman and layout by Yabet Badajoz, on the transition Mass of Feb. 27, 2011 at which Cardinal Roger Mahony transferred leadership of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to Archbishop José Gomez. Judges praised the entry (pages 1 and 3) for capturing “a nice, candid moment, and a good dominant layout.”—Best In-Depth News/Special Interest Reporting: Second place for “Using deadly force in the line of duty: How cops cope” (June 10), by R.W. Dellinger. Judges lauded the story for exploring “a surprising, fresh topic that covers all the angles with honesty and grace. A close second.”—Best Reporting on a Special Age Group (Young Adults): Second place for “At St. Peter Chanel: ‘Not an ordinary group’ of young adults” (Sept. 23), by Doris Benavides. “The subjects in this piece come alive through the many details provided,” said the judges. “The reader has a sense of sitting in on the conversation rather than just reading it. Great reporting on young adults serving young adults.”—Best Regular Column by a Bishop or Archbishop: Second place for “Archbishop’s Message,” by Archbishop José H. Gomez. The entry consisted of three columns: May 27 (“The fastest year in my life”), July 8 (“We need to stand up for parents and families”) and Oct. 21 (“Defending our first freedom”).“Well written columns with strong pastoral messages,” said the judges. “Each column ends with a call to prayer on a specific topic. Archbishop Gomez’s smiling face at the top of the page and the pullout quotes draw readers in.”—Best Special Supplement on an Ordinary’s Transition: Honorable mention for “A Quarter Century of History,” on the ministry of Cardinal Roger Mahony as archbishop (Feb. 25), by The Tidings Staff. In addition, Doris Benavides received a Holy Childhood Association first place award in “mission animation news” reporting for her article, “Holy Childhood Mass honors ‘children helping children’” (Oct. 28). “This well-written piece, with good photos, captured the judges’ attention for its specific and practical information about engaging young people in the mission of the Church in our world,” said the judges. The 2012 Catholic Directory of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles was edited by Hermine Lees and Chris Krause, and designed by Michelle Rugel and José Velasquez.“This directory has taken an area as large and diverse as the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and put all the information required by a serviceable directory between two covers,” said the judges. “The editors have done that beautifully. This ring-bound directory is logically organized and the page designs and photos are excellent. Thumb-indexed for easy access.”
