On April 27, Mariscos El Perihuete, a Mexican restaurant in Paramount, was recognized for joining Choose Health L.A. Restaurants, a program for restaurants that offer multiple sizes, replace kids’ sugary beverages with milk or water, add fruit or vegetables and reduce deep-fried foods.

The St. Francis Medical Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new enrollment, where Christine Montes, public health official, presented restaurant owner Paul Peñuelas with a certificate of recognition.

Officials from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and from the City of Paramount were also on hand to celebrate.

Pe√±uelas is excited that his family-friendly eatery is a member of the health program. “Right now, a lot of people are getting into health foods,” he said. “We want to offer customers another option for eating healthy.”

As an advocate for healthy lifestyle changes, St. Francis Medical Center advances good nutrition and the prevention of obesity, diabetes and heart disease through a variety of community wellness programs.
