A year-long celebration recognizing 50 years of “living faith, engaging hearts, achieving excellence, enlightening minds and transforming lives” began Aug. 30 and 31 at St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura.Following a re-dedication ceremony in the senior quad on Aug. 30, the 50th anniversary Mass with Archbishop José Gomez presiding was celebrated on Aug. 31, at Our Lady of the Assumption Church next door to the high school. The St. Bonaventure community — including current families, alumni, and friends — were joined by clergy from neighboring parishes and those who previously served in the area. Events following the Mass included the consecration of the newly renovated Marian Grotto, a “Walk Through the Years” open house, and a barbecue with live entertainment.Other activities for “A Year in Celebration” include the annual golf tournament, homecoming football game, 50th anniversary Candlelight Christmas Concert, the annual Einstein & Wine Event, the Golden Anniversary Dinner Dance & All Class Reunion, and the 50th Anniversary fiesta. St. Bonaventure High School, named for the patron saint of the city of Ventura (San Buenaventura), began with 70 freshmen in September 1963, founded on the spiritual ideals of St. Francis of Assisi and the academic fervor of his namesake, St. Bonaventure.
