It’s shaping up to be another record event for the upcoming SCRC Catholic Renewal Convention during Labor Day weekend in Anaheim, offering follow-up and expanded sessions on healing and deliverance that helped swell attendance to 10,000 last year.“Registration is looking really good, like it will be another banner year,” said Barbara Lambert, SCRC spokesperson. She credited last year’s 30 percent attendance increase to topical presentations, such as teachings on deliverance given by five exorcists at the “Christ Triumphant Track.”“People were aware of ‘The Rite’ movie and were curious about exorcism. A lot of priests and prayer ministry teams came from around the country,” noted Lambert. This year’s event taking place at the Anaheim Convention Center from Aug. 30-Sept. 1 centers on the theme, “Take Courage, Have Faith,” and will offer a variety of workshops, liturgies and concerts, as well as a “Set Free Track” follow-up to last year’s sessions on healing and deliverance. Additional special tracks include a teen conference, children’s program and Vietnamese conference.Among new SCRC workshop presenters this year are Father Greg Bramlage, who will speak at Friday morning’s arena opening prayer and praise service on the importance of being open to the Holy Spirit, and Neal Lozano, who, along with Father Bramlage and others, will help lead the “Set Free Track.” A short list of workshops and presenters include: “Healing the Roots of Stress,” by Dr. Margarett Schlientz; “Prayer: The Power of Intercession,” by Deacon Alex Jones; “God’s Invitation to Joy,” by Msgr. James Mancini; and “Finding Courage in the Midst of Hardship,” co-led by Father Paul Griesgraber, pastor of twinned parishes St. Catherine of Siena (Reseda) and St. Bridget of Sweden (Van Nuys), and Father Matt Munoz, associate pastor of Our Lady of the Valley (Canoga Park). Arena concerts and liturgies — including the Sunday morning liturgy with presider, Father Alex Aclan, archdiocesan associate vicar for clergy; and the closing Sunday liturgy with main celebrant, Bishop Gordon Bennett — are open to the general public at no cost. On Saturday, popular Catholic musicians John Michael Talbot and Franciscan Father Stan Fortuna, will present a first-ever joint SCRC concert (3:30-5 p.m.) in the arena before the Saturday night liturgy and healing service with Father Lou Cerulli (6:45-10 p.m.).Dominic Berardino, SCRC president, who will give a Saturday morning workshop titled “Angels Among Us,” noted that the annual convention is the largest Catholic renewal event of its kind in the Americas, with its 42 workshops focusing on a range of timely spiritual topics, such as deliverance prayer.“The ‘Set Free Track’ will address a peaceful, non-confrontational approach to deliverance prayer for those who struggle with negative patterns of thinking, habitual sin, addictions, depression, deep-rooted wounds of the past, fears and feelings of hopelessness,” said Berardino. “This approach is catching on around the world and [is valuable] for clergy, counselors and lay prayer ministers who want to learn more on how to assist people in prayer through these issues.”Online registration information for the SCRC convention is available at www.scrc.org. On-site registration at the Anaheim Convention Center opens Friday/Saturday at 8 a.m. and at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.
