Fr. Edmund Maechler, St. Jerome pastor emeritus, dies at 88 Funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 7 at St. Jerome Church in Los Angeles for Father Edmund Maechler, pastor emeritus, who died Oct. 31 at age 88. A retired priest of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Father Maechler had served as a priest for 62 years. Since 1973, he had served at St. Jerome --- as pastor (1973-87) and then as pastor emeritus, though he lived privately in recent years. Two younger brothers --- also priests of the archdiocese --- preceded him in death: Father Gerald T. Maechler, who died in January 2002 at age 72, and Father Joseph Robert (“Bob”) Maechler, who died in May 2006 at age 71. Born Aug. 29, 1923 in Fullerton, Edmund Maechler attended Holy Family School in Glendale, entered the Los Angeles Junior Seminary in 1937 and completed his studies for the priesthood at St. John’s seminary, Camarillo. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles May 7, 1949, and was assigned initially to St. Frances X. Cabrini Catholic Church, Los Angeles. Father Maechler also served as an associate pastor (from 1951 to 1971) at a number of parishes including Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Newport Beach; St. Alphonsus, L.A.; Precious Blood, L.A.; Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pasadena; St. Gerard Majella, L.A.; St. Malachy, L.A.; St. Pancratius, Lakewood; and Holy Family, Glendale. From 1958 to 1960 he served on the Matrimonial Tribunal, then was chaplain at St. Catherine Military Academy, Anaheim, and Marymount High School, Los Angeles. In 1971 he was named pastor at St. Aloysius Gonzaga, Los Angeles, and two years later was named administrator and then pastor at St. Jerome. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City. Deacon Harold Parish Funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 7 at Mary Star of the Sea Churchin Oxnard for Deacon Harold “Hal” Parish, who died Nov. 3 at age 81. Deacon Parish was ordained on Jan. 30, 1982 by Cardinal Timothy Manning. In addition to serving at Mary Star of the Sea, he also served the Archdiocese as a Canon Lawyer in the Marriage Tribunal for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife Anna. Interment was at Santa Clara Cemetery, Oxnard.
