Rick Ibarra is welcomed back to Mary Star High School as the new head coach of the baseball team after leaving in 2004 for Los Angeles Harbor College, where he acted as assistant coach and helped the team reach the 2007 Super Regionals.
Ibarra has a successful record during his previous time at Mary Star. In 2002, the Stars were the only baseball team in the school’s history to reach the CIF championship game.
That same team still holds the school record for most wins. Ibarra was named the 2002 South Bay Coach of the Year by the Los Angeles Times and the Daily Breeze and selected to coach the South Bay Athletic Club All Star Classic.
“As a previous assistant coach and head coach of Mary Star Baseball, Rick was a part of six league championships for our school,” said Rita Dever, principal. “His coaching successes and 20 years of teaching in the classroom have made a positive impact on the lives of students and athletes.”
Dever added that Ibarra’s “dedication to not just teaching the sport but emphasizing the love of the game, sportsmanship and hard work will benefit our program greatly.”
Mary Star High School is a college preparatory program based in San Pedro and serves the Los Angeles Harbor area with an Advanced Placement (AP) track option and traditional Catholic values.
