Gabriela V. and Johanna C., two high school graduates from Catholic schools in the Los Angeles area, are the recipients of thousands of dollars in scholarship funding from the Making Education the Answer Foundation (META). The college scholarships were announced at a private event in Glendora on June 20.
The two students were among 35 Hispanic students from high schools across Southern California to be honored with a scholarship. The META scholarships range from $500 book scholarships to $7,500 program scholarships payable over a four-year period. Recipients of the awards were selected based on their high academic achievements, leadership roles, jobs and volunteer service.
Gabriela V. is a graduate of St. Paul High School, where she earned a 4.11 GPA and ranked 11th in her class. A trumpet player for her school band, she was also involved in student government, serving as both the secretary and treasurer.
Her close relationship with her brother, who has special needs, gave her an interest in medical care. She is enrolled as a freshman at UC Riverside for this fall and plans to attend medical school upon graduation.
Johanna C. is a graduate of St. Genevieve High School with a 4.32 GPA. She played a leadership role as her school’s associated student body vice president.
She is active in her church community and is a member of the Knights of the Altar, a national organization of altar servers in the Catholic Church. Johanna stays close to her Hispanic roots by acting as the co-founder and president of Latinos Unidos, a Hispanic heritage club.
She is enrolled as a freshman at the University of San Francisco for this fall as a marketing and advertising student. She will also minor in communications.
