On April 16, the Habitat L.A. Catholic Coalition broke ground for a house in Montebello, drawing nearly 60 volunteers from 10 local parishes. Auxiliary Bishop O’Connell attended the event, blessing both the site and the volunteers.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat L.A.) has partnered with local Catholic churches and organizations. Celebrating its second year, the Habitat L.A. Catholic Coalition is making a significant impact on building affordable and sustainable housing in the Los Angeles area.
“It’s wonderful to be building on the momentum of last year to help another hardworking, low-income family purchase their first home,” says Chris Untiet, Habitat L.A.’s director of Faith Relations. “We invite more Catholics to join us in the months ahead to put our faith into action.”
Last year, the Catholic Coalition sponsored a Habitat L.A. home in Lynwood for a Catholic school teacher, a U.S. Navy veteran and their four children. Archbishop José H. Gomez has expressed his support of the Catholic Coalition and even visited to site of the Lynwood home in July 2015.
