Football: Three OC schools, Bishop Diego stay unbeaten

Top-ranked Mater Dei and Bishop Diego (both 3-0) continued their winning ways last weekend, but No. 1 Paraclete lost for the first time as the 2017 high school football season completed its third week of action.

Mater Dei of Santa Ana (No. 1 in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 poll) blanked La Mirada 42-0, and Bishop Diego of Santa Barbara (No. 1 in Division 6) won by the same margin in a 45-3 pasting of Nipomo. Paraclete (No. 1 in D-5) lost for the first time, 30-21, to Oaks Christian of Westlake Village.

Three other Orange County schools remained undefeated: J.Serra (No. 5 in D-1) continued its high-scoring season beating Bishop Amat, 59-35; Santa Margarita (No. 10) ran its record to 3-0 with a 61-7 triumph over Alemany; and Servite rolled past Roosevelt (Eastvale), 52-24.

In a matchup pitting two of Division 1’s best teams, St. John Bosco (No. 2) beat Chaminade (No. 4), 31-17, in Bellflower, to give both teams 2-1 records. Cathedral, Division 2’s second-ranked team, stayed unbeaten by hammering Lynwood 63-0, and St. Francis (No. 5 in D-3) made it two straight wins with a 42-0 whitewash of Pasadena.

St. Joseph of Santa Maria (No. 8 in D-6) ran away from St. Bonaventure, 42-12, and St. Anthony (No. 2 in D-9) was a 14-6 winner over Long Beach Wilson. But St. Genevieve (No. 4 in D-11) lost its first game, 39-12, to West Ranch, and Mary Star (No. 10 in D-13) was beaten by Linfield Christian, 40-7.

In perhaps the most exciting game of last week, Cantwell-Sacred Heart outlasted Salesian, 34-32, to stay unbeaten at 2-0. Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks ran its record to 3-0, topping Leuzinger 49-0, and Damien likewise made it three straight wins, beating Claremont 41-13.

This week’s games

Headlining the coming week’s action is a Division 6 clash between Bishop Diego (3-0) and St. Joseph (2-1) at Santa Maria on Sept. 15. The Cardinals are contenders for the Tri-Valley League title, while the Knights look to prevail in the Los Padres League.

The following day, St. Bonaventure plays Argonaut (Jackson), St. John Bosco takes on L.A. City school Dorsey, and Mater Dei hosts Bergen Catholic, the top-rated team in New Jersey, all at Mission Viejo High School as part of the Under Armour Brothers in Arms Classic to promote leadership and sacrifice. The classic is held over a period of weeks in honor of Lt. Brendan Looney, a Navy Seal and Catholic high school football star from Maryland, who died in combat while serving in Afghanistan in 2010.
