First-week wins (and losses) resulted in slight changes to the CIF-Southern Section football polls released Aug. 28.Mater Dei, after an impressive opening win over Bishop Amat, remained top-ranked in Division 1, followed by St. John Bosco which remained second despite its overtime loss in Florida to St. Thomas Aquinas.
Chaminade and Serra switched places at 4 and 5, after Chaminade’s win over Oaks Christian and Serra’s narrow loss to Narbonne, and J.Serra held on to the seventh spot following its victory over Corona Del Mar.The Monarchs also remain the nation’s top-ranked high school team, according to MaxPreps’ “Xcellent 25” poll, and is No. 1 in MaxPreps’ California Top 25 released Aug. 29. Others on the statewide list include St. John Bosco (2), Serra (9), J.Serra (11), Bishop Amat (20) and Santa Margarita (23).
In Division 5, the Paraclete Spirits likewise retained their No. 1 ranking after doubling up the score on Serrano last weekend. St. Joseph (Santa Maria) stayed at No. 4, having played well in its opening loss to Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks), a Division 2 school.
Elsewhere, Cathedral jumped into ninth place in Division 2, having beaten Santa Fe; St. Francis (idle last week) and Crespi (a winner over Sylmar) both dropped from the Division 3 top 10; St. Paul (fourth) and Bishop Diego (ninth) retained their Division 6 rankings after victories; La Salle fell from third to ninth in Division 8 after an opening loss; and St. Anthony (which opens its season Sept. 1) rose from third to second in Division 9.
New to the top 10 in their respective divisions were St. Genevieve (a big winner over Poly/Sun Valley), third in Division 11, and Cantwell-Sacred Heart (also a big winner over Glendale), ninth, and Santa Clara (idle last week), tenth in Division 13.
