Bishop Montgomery and Cathedral, which traded the top ranking several times throughout the season in Division 4, will meet May 24 to decide the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 volleyball title at Cerritos College.

Both teams won difficult 4-set semifinal matches on May 21. Bishop Montgomery outlasted La Salle, 19-25, 32-30, 25-20 and 25-23, while Cathedral won over St. Margaret’s, 25-16, 24-26, 25-21 and 25-22. Cathedral (27-11) ended the regular season at No. 1, followed by Bishop Montgomery (24-9) and La Salle (23-12).

Bishop Montgomery and Cathedral split their two regular season meetings, with Bishop Montgomery winning a 4-set match on April 8 and Cathedral winning in straight sets on May 5. They tied for first in league play at 7-1.

The final will be played at 4:30 p.m. on May 24 at Cerritos College, three hours ahead of the Division 1 championship featuring Loyola and Huntington Beach. The Cubs rallied to defeat Corona de Mar in the semifinals: 25-17, 20-25, 18-25, 25-23 and — in a nail-biting final set — 15-14.

Division 4: Bishop Montgomery defeated Damien in 3 of 4 sets, Cathedral defeated Yucaipa in straight sets, St. Margaret’s defeated Salesian in 3 of 4 sets, and La Salle defeated Santa Fe in straight sets.

Semifinal results (May 21):

Division 1: Loyola defeated Corona de Mar in 3 of 5 sets.

Division 4: Bishop Montgomery defeated La Salle in 3 of 4 sets, and Cathedral defeated St. Margaret’s in 3 of 4 sets.

Boys Tennis

Loyola and Bishop Montgomery were the only Catholic schools to reach the second round of the CIF-Southern Section tennis team championships, but were defeated in quarterfinal action May 16.

In Division 1, Loyola was defeated by Los Alamitos 11-7, while in Division 5 Bishop Montgomery lost to Maranatha 12-6. Other Catholic schools who reached the team playoffs and lost in first round action were St. Francis, Santa Margarita, Mater Dei and Servite (in Division 1), St. Bonaventure (Division 4) and La Salle (Division 5).

Boys Golf

Individual regional tournaments took place May 12, with Loyola’s Daniel Lopez (fourth, 71) and Bryant Falconello (tied for 12th, 74) advancing to the CIF-SS Individual Finals on May 27 from the Northern Division event at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard. From the Southern Division event at Skylinks Golf Course, Servite’s Matt Wilson (second, 72) and Damien’s Nathan Clark (76, tied for 15th) advanced.

In team competition held May 19, Loyola took first place in the Central Region event at Lakewood Golf Course, while Mater Dei captured the Western Region title at Sierra La Verne Country Club. Other Catholic school competitors in the team competition included”
